The Evanosky Foundation's House of Hope is a home away from home for families going through the transplant process at Duke Children's Hospital. The transplant process typically requires a family to travel out of state and stay in North Carolina for five to ten months, creating a significant financial and emotional burden. The House of Hope apartment addresses these issues by offering luxury accommodations to families free of charge.
Opened in September 2008, the House of Hope is professionally decorated and features conveniences such as a high-efficiency washer and dryer, computer with wireless high-speed Internet access, flat screen televisions, DVD players, and a video gaming system. Special amenities that enable a cleaner environment and reduce dust accumulation, such as laminate floors, ceiling fans and wood blinds, were also installed. Additionally, Flexsteel Industries provided furniture covered in a specially patented material that is both comfortable and can be easily disinfected, while Uttermost supplied the well-appointed lamps, clocks, and wall decor that help give the House of Hope its welcoming atmosphere. Having gone through the transplant process with their youngest son at Duke University in early 2005, the Evanosky family knows first-hand the difficulty of trying to maintain two households while going through an extremely stressful day-to-day medical routine following a life-and-death procedure. Often, one spouse must continue his or her daily routine at home, going to work, paying bills and caring for the family's healthy children, while the other spouse is alone, far from home in an unfamiliar city, caring for the sick child. Recognizing that most families do not have the financial resources to fund two homes, especially while incurring substantial medical bills, The Evanosky Foundation developed the House of Hope.
